EU Ambassador to Georgia: Draft law on "foreign agents" is incompatible with European norms

Pawel Gerczynski, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, expressed his opinion on the draft law on "foreign agents" initiated by the ruling Georgian Dream party. He called it "incompatible with European norms and values". This was reported by Front News Georgia.

He emphasized that although this is only a proposal, it will require serious discussion in the next few weeks or even months.

"I sincerely hope that a way will be found to ensure transparency that is absolutely legitimate, without marginalizing, pushing aside and stigmatizing civil society organizations that play a very important role in any democracy, including Georgia, which is on the way to Europe," Gerczynski said.

In addition, the Ambassador commented on the negotiation process between the EU and Georgia on the country's accession to the European Union. He noted that a positive decision on the start of negotiations depends on how quickly and effectively the nine steps necessary for Georgia to make progress in this direction will be implemented.

"Along with granting candidate status, European leaders presented a roadmap of what Georgia needs to do to move to the next stage - the start of negotiations on EU membership. This roadmap consists of nine steps. All of them are equally important. Yes, you are right, it was about five months ago. The work is ongoing, we are in constant contact with the Georgian authorities," Gerczynski said.

The Ambassador emphasized the importance of implementing these steps and noted that time is running out. He called on the Georgian political elite to take steps to move the country forward on its path to the European Union.

Gerczynski emphasized that the EU is ready to support Georgia in this process and that the future rapprochement between Georgia and the EU is in the hands of the Georgian political elite.
