Smuggling 14 kg of gold by Ukrainian diplomat in Poland: court reveals details of case

The court has revealed details of the case with the transportation of foreign currency, gold and contraband cigarettes by employees of the Ukrainian embassy in Poland. This is reported by the weekly "Court reporter" with reference to the full text of the ruling of December 9.

The court decided to confiscate everything the offender tried to smuggle - €68,835, $140,230, 12,100 Polish zlotys, as well as 327 items of gold jewelry (including inlays), gold pellets, gold bars, coins and scrap gold. The court also fined the man in the amount of 100% of the value of goods - UAH 26.8 million.

Under the law, the defendant in the case is the driver of the vehicle, who carried the cargo. At the same time there are other persons involved in the case, in particular, a diplomatic courier with a destination in Lviv from Warsaw.

Other details of the case were not known before.

Now it turns out that the jewelry and currency were transported in a car of the Ukrainian Embassy in Poland under the guise of diplomatic mail.

When the seized property was arrested, a representative of the Ukrainian embassy in Poland did not appear at the court session. The court only received a statement in which the representative of the embassy requested that in order to ensure the normal functioning of the diplomatic office and transport a number of urgent international measures to give the minibus to the embassy for safekeeping.

On April 1 of last year the driver was dismissed from his job at the embassy "for disciplinary misconduct. When he was tried for an administrative offense (transporting goods across the border with concealment from the customs border), he refused to give any explanation.

As reported, in the minibus, which was stopped for inspection on February 28, 2021, were the driver of the embassy and the consular attache of the Ukrainian Embassy in Poland.

"According to the results of the search, 140,000 US dollars, 67,200 euros, 11,600 Polish zlotys, 16 kg of gold, 8,826 blocks of cigarettes were found and seized," the GBR noted.

It should be noted that the court decision specifies 14 kilograms of gold, while the report of the State Border Committee informed about 16 kilograms. The court decision also failed to mention smuggled cigarettes.
