The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia stated that they may suspend the projects of UN agencies

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia stated that it may suspend the current projects of one or another international non-governmental organization (INGO) or UN agencies - "in the event that the transparency of activities and reporting are not fully ensured."

The Abkhaz agency says that as part of monitoring the progress of projects and programs, they invited a meeting with the head of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) office in Abkhazia.

"In response to this request, a letter was received with a 'proposal to consider alternative forms of providing the necessary information, rather than a meeting at the political level.' Actions of this nature by INGOs call into question the transparency of their activities," the statement said.

In May 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia closed the project of the international organization "Movement Against Hunger" entitled "Improving local governance with the help of inclusive approaches in the field of development". The Abkhaz agency stated that, together with the State Security Service, they discovered facts indicating the inconsistency of the provided data about the project with the measures implemented within its framework. In particular, the Abkhaz authorities were dissatisfied with a part of the project, which involves the involvement of representatives of Abkhaz and Georgian youth in intercultural dialogue by conducting joint trainings and seminars in Moldova, Austria, and Armenia.

In September of last year, the Abkhazian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared a French citizen Thifen Lucas persona non grata "for collecting intelligence." Lukas managed one of the programs of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which was implemented in the village of Primorske in the Gudaut district, in the immediate vicinity of the Russian military base.

Later, the head of the Abkhaz department, Inal Ardzinba, called on the people of Abkhazia not to cooperate with the Berghof Foundation, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes special control over any interaction with this foundation.

Inal Ardzinba declares that he supports the idea of developing and adopting a law on the regulation of NGO activities.
