Ruling party defeated in Moldovan local elections

In Moldova's local elections, candidates from the ruling "Action and Solidarity Party" (ASP) lost the race for mayor in 30 of 36 cities. They will also not have a majority of votes in any of the district councils. This is evidenced by preliminary data from the Central Election Commission of Moldova after counting 90% of the votes, NewsMaker reports.

Elections in Moldova were held on Sunday, November 5. The overall turnout in Moldova was 41.4%, which is comparable to the 2019 elections (41.7% took part in the voting then). This time, the electoral threshold was not met in eight villages. Repeated elections will be organized there.

In most cities and district councils, candidates of the Party of Socialists, headed by former President Igor Dodon, "Our Party", and other opposition groups are leading the way. For example, the candidate of the "National Alternative Movement" (MAN) party, Ion Ceban, who was running for a second term as mayor of Chisinau, has already declared his victory in the elections. He received 50.58% of the vote, the publication writes. Lilian Carp, a candidate from the ruling party, came in second with 28.20%.

In the second largest city of Moldova, Balti, the candidate from "Our Party", Alexandr Petkov, received the most votes - 22.69%. The next candidate was Arina Korshikova, an independent, with 21.52%.

The Central Election Commission reported that there were no significant violations during the voting.

Overall, the turnout was 41.4%, which is more than 1.147 million people. However, repeat elections are to be held in eight localities of the country, as less than 25% of eligible voters showed up at the polls.
