Court grants permission to arrest Yanukovych for signing the Kharkiv Agreements

The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv arrested ex-President Viktor Yanukovych in absentia in the case of signing the "Kharkiv agreements," according to the Office of the Prosecutor General.

"With the participation of prosecutors of the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Pechersky district court of Kiev on May 23, 2022 selected the former President of Ukraine a preventive measure in the form of detention in criminal proceedings on the circumstances of his committing high treason (part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)," - said in the message.

According to the prosecutor's office, the former president of Ukraine, acting jointly and by prior collusion with the former Prime Minister of Ukraine to the detriment of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, provided assistance to a foreign state - the Russian Federation and its representatives in carrying out subversive activities against Ukraine.

"On April 21, 2010, being in Kharkiv, the suspect signed on behalf of Ukraine the Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, which extended for 25 years the Russian Federation Black Sea Fleet on the territory of Ukraine - Crimea and Sevastopol, instead of preparing for its withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine," - the message says.

As stressed in the report, such actions created the preconditions for an increase in the number of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine, their re-equipment, modernization and further - invasion of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and their occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol.

The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings is carried out by the investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation.
