The Council adopted the bill "On media" in the first reading

The Verkhovna Rada adopted as a basis the draft law "On media" No. 2693-d. 233 people's deputies supported the bill in the first reading.

 

 As noted in the accompanying documents to the draft law "On Media", it is aimed at ensuring the realization of the rights to freedom of expression, receiving versatile, reliable and operational information, ensuring pluralism of opinions and free dissemination of information, protecting the national interests of Ukraine and the rights of users of media services . The draft law regulates activities in the media sphere in accordance with the principles of transparency, fairness and impartiality, stimulates the existence of a competitive environment, equality and independence of the media, and also defines the legal status, formation procedure, activities and powers of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting.

 

 Adoption of the draft law will create the necessary modern European conditions for meeting the informational needs of Ukrainian citizens, effective development of audiovisual media services using new technologies.

 

 As a result of the adoption of the draft law, the relevant laws "On printed mass media (press) in Ukraine", "On television and radio broadcasting", "On information agencies", "On the National Council of Ukraine for television and radio broadcasting" will be recognized as having lost their validity. , "On the procedure for covering the activities of state authorities and local self-government bodies in Ukraine by means of mass information" and draft laws that amended about 100 current laws.

 

 As reported, the updating of national legislation in the field of audiovisual services is one of Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union, the implementation of which is necessary for the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
