 Pelosi's announcement came a day after vote counts in the midterm congressional elections showed that Republicans had won a majority in the chamber.

 82-year-old Pelosi has twice served as speaker. The politician has been a member of parliament for 35 years and is considered one of the leaders of the Democratic Party. She has said she intends to stay in Congress to help her successor.
