Ukraine plans a new export route through the Danube due to the blockade of the border with Poland

Amid the ongoing blockades of the Polish border, Ukraine plans to open an additional export route via the Danube, which will help increase grain exports to pre-war levels. This was stated by the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov during the Munich Security Conference, Bloomberg reports.

According to the minister, Ukraine plans to remove all artificial obstacles for exporters this year, as well as improve domestic logistics. Container transportation on the upper Danube is planned, he said.

Kubrakov noted that Romania is "more predictable" than Poland. An additional route through the Romanian river border should increase Ukrainian grain exports to pre-war levels, which is currently impossible due to protests in Poland.

According to the minister, the proposed new route will run from the Ukrainian port of Izmail to Romania's Constanta and German Danube ports. Ukraine's Danube Shipping Company has already built a second large-capacity SLG barge to deliver cargo, the Infrastructure Ministry reported at the beginning of February.

Kubrakov noted that despite the fact that many exporters prefer the Black Sea because it is cheaper, exports via the Danube amount to 1.2-1.8 million tons per month.
