Czech Republic buys shells for Ukraine from Russia's allies - The Wall Street Journal

The Czech Republic purchases artillery shells for Ukraine, in particular from countries that call themselves Russia's allies. The Wall Street Journal reports this with reference to an unnamed source in the Czech government.

According to the source, the Czech Republic has intensified Cold War contacts and found 300,000 Soviet-made shells for Ukraine, as well as 500,000 Western-made shells in third countries, including those considered Russia's allies. Where exactly the country buys the shells remains a secret.

However, according to the publication, the Czech Republic's former affiliation with the former Soviet bloc helped. In particular, the country has maintained good relations with many states in the Global South that have large stockpiles of Soviet-era weapons and are able to increase production.

Also, as The Wall Street Journal notes, the Czech Republic has managed to find an additional 700,000 rounds of ammunition that will be delivered to Ukraine if funding is available.

According to the interlocutor of the publication in the Czech government, a total of about 3 billion euros, equivalent to $3.3 billion, is needed to purchase 1.5 million shells.
