Britain to send military experts to Bosnia to combat Russian influence

Britain will send military specialists to Bosnia and Herzegovina to counter Russian influence and strengthen the NATO mission.

The British government says.

"We cannot allow the Western Balkans to become another platform for Putin's destructive activities. By fanning the flames of separatism, Russia seeks to abolish the achievements of the past three decades in Bosnia and Herzegovina, achievements that have brought more stability to our entire continent," said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

"That is why we are stepping up our support for Bosnia and Herzegovina by answering our friends' call to help protect the peace they rightly deserve," he added.

At the request of NATO's Sarajevo office, a British military expert on countering disinformation and a civilian strategic defense adviser will be deployed to support and train the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The counter-disinformation expert will strengthen the NATO office and Bosnia and Herzegovina's ability to counter malign influences by helping to block Russian and other attempts to undermine democracy in the country and region.

The new Strategic Defense Advisor will support defense reform in the country, helping it develop a modern, representative armed force brought up to NATO standards.

In addition, the United Kingdom will allocate £750,000 for the creation of a cybersecurity center at the University of Sarajevo. According to the British government, this will strengthen Bosnia and Herzegovina's defense against cyber attacks that can harm people both inside and outside the country. Britain will work closely with the media and Bosnian institutions to provide them with tools to identify and mitigate lies and misinformation.
