German Foreign Minister: Europe cannot be indifferent to the issue of Taiwan

Europe should not turn a blind eye to tensions between China and Taiwan, as a military escalation in the region would be the worst-case scenario for the global economy.

This is the opinion of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Berbock, Reuters reports.

Speaking during a visit to China, Burbock struck a tone different from that of French President Emmanuel Macron, who last week warned the European Union against getting involved in "foreign crises" like Taiwan's.

"Germany and the European Union are economically vulnerable, which means we cannot be indifferent to tensions in the Taiwan Strait," Burbock said in the Chinese port of Tianjin.

Many EU members hope that Germany will use Burbock's trip to outline a clear and unified EU line on China.

"Fifty percent of world trade passes through the Taiwan Strait, 70% of semiconductors pass through the Taiwan Strait, so free passage also meets our economic interests," the head of the German Foreign Ministry emphasized.
