After Bakhmut, the "Wagnerians" are unlikely to be able to advance in any other direction - ISW

After Bakhmut, the mercenaries of the "Wagner" PMC, founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, are unlikely to be able to conduct an offensive in any other direction.

This is reported by the Institute for the Study of War.

According to analysts, after a month of "severe bloody battles" for Bakhmut (Donetsk region), "Wagner" fighters will probably try to leave their current positions or, at least, move from offensive operations to defense.

As noted, the "Wagnerians" began to send "signals" of their inability to conduct offensive operations outside Bakhmut from the end of December 2022. Russian regular forces located on the northern and southern flanks of Bakhmut are also unlikely to advance west toward Kostiantynivka or north toward Slovyansk, given Ukrainian counterattacks in the area.

It is also unlikely that the Russian army will conduct offensive operations if the mercenaries of the "Wagner" PMC fulfill Yevgeny Prigozhin's promise to withdraw from Bakhmut on May 25.

The armed forces of Ukraine took Bakhmut in semi-encirclement. Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Malyar emphasized that the Ukrainian military continues to maintain control over part of the city.

US President Joe Biden said that the Russians lost more than 100,000 people in the battles for Bakhmut. Sanitary losses are taken into account.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, during a conversation with US President Joe Biden, denied the information that the Russian occupiers had completely captured Bakhmut.
