Ukraine and mobilization: Taras Chmut on the strategy of strengthening the armed forces

Mobilization in Ukraine will continue due to the need to rebuild the armed forces. At the same time, the involvement of civilian specialists from various fields can provide the army additional strength, especially if they are properly adapted to the appropriate positions. This was stated by Taras Chmut, director of the Come Back Alive Foundation, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

In his opinion, thousands more people need to be mobilized to strengthen the army. Chmut suggests that the continuation of hostilities may take several years.

"People who have been in the trenches on the front line for a year and a half need to recover physiologically. To do this, they need to be replaced in the trenches by someone. This means hundreds of thousands of people who will have to be mobilized," he emphasized.

Chmut pointed out that the level of motivation and preparedness of the military has decreased due to the size of the army. He emphasized that the involvement of civilian specialists, if properly distributed, can significantly strengthen the army.

"The greater the number, the worse the quality, in terms of weapons, equipment, everything. And if we create an army of one or two million tomorrow, the quality will fall again. On the other hand, the involvement of many civilians from various fields gives a very strong reinforcement if these people are put in the right positions," Chmut noted.

According to him, during the initial period of the full-scale invasion, civilian specialists were correctly placed in the appropriate positions.

"Conditionally, if you are a journalist, go to communications, not to the machine gunners, and if you were mobilized in 2014 as a machine gunner, you should go to machine gunners now, not to become a press officer. For example, if you are an IT specialist, then go to a communication center, not to a supply company. This is a fundamental story. And when this happens, there is a synergistic effect of strengthening the entire system," Chmut explained.
