Ukraine will be a priority for the Czech EU presidency

Ukraine, energy security, defense and cyber security, economic and democratic stability. These five topics are at the top of the political agenda of the future Czech presidency of the EU Council, as stated in a draft internal document referred to by EURACTIV, writes UNN.

The Czech Republic will hold the presidency of the EU Council from July 1 until the end of the year. During the six-month period, Prague will conduct diplomatic work that plays a crucial role in shaping the EU's agenda.

"The joint goal of the Czech presidency is to contribute as much as possible to the creation of conditions for EU security and prosperity in the context of the European values of freedom, social justice, democracy, the rule of law and environmental responsibility," the draft document, due to be published on June 15, reads.

War in Ukraine

"Not surprisingly, the Ukrainian crisis is at the top of the Czech political agenda. This includes both hitting Russia with all EU tools, primarily economic sanctions, and providing political and military support to Ukraine," the paper writes.

Prague, it said, is determined to work with the European Commission to reallocate EU funding to member states that have opened their doors to refugees, helping them create the necessary structures to deal with the humanitarian crisis.

Moreover, "the Czech presidency will work in favor of reaching a consensus on granting candidate status to Ukraine," the draft states.

After the end of hostilities, it says, the most important task will be the postwar reconstruction of Ukraine.
