The European Parliament may impose duties on Ukrainian eggs, sugar and poultry meat

Members of the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade have approved a proposal to extend the temporary suspension of import duties and quotas on exports of Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU for another year. Thus, the suspension will last from June 6, 2024 to June 5, 2025. This was reported by the press service of the European Parliament.

According to the decision, there will be no restrictions on grain supplies from Ukraine starting June 6. However, the European Commission will be given the right to restrict imports of poultry, eggs and sugar from Ukraine if the volume of imports of these goods exceeds the average volumes of supplies for 2022 and 2023.

Restrictions may be imposed by way of duties.

The Parliament is expected to vote on the decision in the first reading at a plenary session next week. The European Council will then formally approve the regulation, and it will enter into force after publication in the EU's Official Journal.

According to the rapporteur on the issue, Sandra Kalniete, the committee's decision is a "strong signal" of the EU's steady support for Ukraine and its people.

"The extension of the EU trade measures will ensure that Ukraine can continue to export its agricultural products to the EU, which is the most important source of life for the Ukrainian economy. At the same time, the proposal includes reliable guarantees to ensure that our farmers are not overwhelmed by a sudden increase in imports," she said.

Kalniete noted that the Commission will be able to reintroduce tariffs or take any other necessary measures if it finds that imports of certain products leads to violations in the EU market.

"It's a good balance between continuing our vital support for Ukraine and the necessary protection of our markets," she emphasized.
