The British Foreign Office announced a discussion of the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she supported the idea of confiscating frozen Russian assets in Britain and handing them over to victims of Russia's war in Ukraine.

The Guardian notes that Truss told British MPs last week.

"I support this concept. We're looking at it very closely. The Canadians have actually just passed a law. It's an issue that we're working on with the Home Office and the Treasury Department, but I certainly agree with the concept. We just need to work out the details," the minister said.

She noted that the initiative would likely require legislation, but not necessarily. The seized funds could have been given either to individuals as reparations or to the Ukrainian state.

Truss is expected to announce plans to hold a reconstruction conference in Britain next year on Monday at a conference on Ukraine's reconstruction in Lugano.

As a reminder, amendments to the Special Economic Measures Act came into force in Canada, providing for the possibility of confiscating assets sanctioned because of Russia's war and using them in support of Ukraine.
