Latvian Foreign Minister resigns

Latvian Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš has decided to resign. His decision became known after his meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa. This was reported by Delfi.

The publication notes that Kariņš will leave the post of Foreign Minister on April 10, and the next day - April 11 - the Latvian Saeima may approve a new minister.

On March 22, the Latvian Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal investigation into the possible embezzlement of public funds through the use of special flights for Kariņš' business trips when he was prime minister. This announcement caused criticism in the society.

The State Chancellery of Latvia has calculated that from September 2021 to September 2023, EUR 613,830 was spent from the country's state budget on such flights, and together with the part of the costs covered by the EU, EUR 1.36 million. Thus, the amount spent on special flights from 2021 to 2023 exceeded the amounts stipulated in the agreements.
